From Auckland to Hamilton, via Rotorua, the girls from Belridge Secondary College in Perth played against highly competitive Kiwi opposition, whilst experiencing the beauty and excitement New Zealand’s North Island has to offer on their ten-day netball tour.
The group began their tour in Auckland, playing a round-robin tournament with two other Auckland teams as well as taking in some of the city’s sights before heading to Waitomo where the girls explored the extensive underground cave system. The girls faced challenging opposition in Hamilton, where they learned a great deal about the fast-paced style of play in top New Zealand netball schools. A mixture of competitive games and unique outdoor activities were the highlights for the girls in Rotorua. They nestled into a cart and zoomed off to discover who has the skills to master the Luge, and they had an amazing cultural experience at the Mitai Village which ended with a traditional Hangi-style buffet and great entertainment. Two of the girls from Belridge even got up on stage to sing Waltzing Matilda!
The group also enjoyed the after-match functions with the New Zealand host teams, which gave the girls a chance to get to know their Kiwi counterparts. A valuable part of the touring experience is having the opportunity to discuss different styles of netball with their peers and learn from the Kiwi approach to the sport. The New Zealand winter couldn’t have been any better during the ten-day tour—the girls must have brought the sunshine from Perth!
Student Horizons was proud to partner with Belridge Secondary College students on this epic tour of New Zealand and we look forward to working with the school on their next tour.
