In December 2018, 30 boys from St Joseph’s Nudgee College embarked on an unforgettable trip to Sri Lanka. The boys experienced the hustle and bustle of Colombo, spotted wild elephants in Habarana, climbed over 1000 steps up the ancient Sigiriya Rock Fortress and experienced the culture and history in Kandy.
Throughout the 4 cities visited by the group, they played 6 matches in total against local teams in small towns as well as first class venues. Experiencing many different grounds to test their skills, the boys then had an opportunity to enhance these skills with former Sri Lankan cricketer Avishka Gunawardene in a professional coaching clinic!
A stand out for the boys was no doubt their ability to give back to the local communities, the entire group donated many pieces of cricketing kit to local teams and even young children playing in fields alongside the road. To see the children’s faces receiving such gifts as a random act of kindness was truly moving for everyone involved.
These experiences of a diverse country and first-class cricket will no doubt influence their cricketing ability and outlook on the world going forward.
