Mt Smart Grand Final - Orewa College come out on top

The first game of Round 6 of Monday night rugby league was the final of the Student Horizons - North Harbour Schools League Competition between Orewa and Northcote Colleges. Both had played Monday night league at Mt Smart Stadium during the competition and in their recent round robin match Orewa were winners 30 - 24.

Orewa have been a consistently high scoring team during the competition and it looked like this would be the case again when they scored early and went out to a 4-nil lead. Northcote dug in and although Orewa made good metres down field in their sets of six, they were unable to score and eventually it was Northcote who scored a converted try right on half time, going to the break 6-4 up.
In the second half Orewa scored three tries and kicked a conversion taking an 18-6 lead and despite having a player sin binned with only minutes to go, they held on to win. Northcote were unlucky in having two try scoring opportunities denied while Orewa were a man down, the first due to a forward pass and the second as the result of a knock on in goal as two players dived for the ball.
At the conclusion of the game there were on field presentations to both teams by Duane Mann of Auckland Rugby League and Jamie Wansey of Student Horizons, the North Harbour tournament sponsors.
Mitchell Eades of Orewa College was named Player of the Tournament and the captains, Josh Farrant of Northcote and Luke Weddell of Orewa spoke about how much they and their teams had enjoyed the competition and the opportunity to play in televised games at Mt Smart Stadium.
Next Monday night Southern Cross Campus and Pakuranga College will play off to find the winner of the Counties Manukau conference, with the winners to meet Orewa College in the final of Monday Night Rugby League on October 15.
