Their itinerary took them through Cambridge, Rotorua and Auckland, playing three fixtures against some tough opposition. The Taaone High School teachers core aims were to challenge their students on the football field whilst giving them as many educational and fun experiences off the field. Jamie Wansey, Managing Director of Student Horizons, the specialist tour company that organsied their trip explained “many of the students would never get such an overseas experience like this again and understandably their teachers wanted to make it a trip of a lifetime for their boys”.

A few highlights from their tour included Māori cultural experiences, Spookers, Agro Ventures, Rainbows End, OFC Champions League Final, Auckland city tour and a football coaching clinic with Brian Shelley (Waitakere United) and Jenny Bindon (Football Ferns Goal Keeper and Student Horizons Ambassador). “It was fantastic to give some one on one coaching to the Taaone High School Goalkeepers. The lads worked hard and certainly have potential”. For one of the goal keepers the coaching experience was very special with Jenny gifting a pair of her keeper gloves she wore at the Olympics! “It's just great to give something back to the game that has served me so well". said Jenny.

One of the big hits of the tour for the boys and staff were the billeting exchanges with each of the schools they played. St Peters Cambridge, Avondale College and Auckland Grammar staff, parents and boys went out of their way to give their new friends an amazing experience. Jamie Wansey remarks “The Taaone boys even shedding a few tears when saying goodbye to some of their families showed what a big impact their hosts had made on our Tahitian group”.

On the field the Taaone High School boys did themselves proud against accomplished opposition.

Despite not winning on New Zealand soil their tour was a great success from a football perspective. Taaone teacher, Guillaume Fanet explains “This tour enabled us to benchmark our standard of football against well drilled and organized New Zealand teams, something that is difficult to do in Tahiti where there is little opposition”.

The team at Student Horizons had an absolute blast looking after the Taaone High School football tour group from Tahiti. “They were just a pleasure to work with and we look forward to working with them again into the future” says Jamie.

As for Taaone High School, Guillaume reports “Flawless organisation, great moments, a dream for students. The perfect school trip. Thank you again and again to Student Horizons".

Jenny Bindon, Ambassador of Student Horizons explains “Jamie and the team at Student Horizons are all about giving overseas opportunities to young people that will help to broaden their minds. The Tahitian team have certainly gone home with a broader picture of the world we live in!”
